The Rebel INS breathes life into ever track he’s on. He’s the definitive “lead-off hitter” of rap - if you need someone to set the tone for a posse cut, Deck is the one you call on. But even if you’re one of the best lyricists of a generation with razor sharp delivery and flows for days, when you’re part of a clan of 9 of the most colourful emcees of all time, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Delayed from its original 1997 release due to the fabled flood that destroyed hundreds of RZA’s instrumentals, Uncontrolled Substance marked Inspectah Deck’s solo debut. Essentially having to be built back up from scratch, Deck himself handled the majority of the production with help from RZA, Math, True Master and 4th Disciple. Unfortunately, Uncontrolled Substance doesn’t get as much love as the early Wu-Tang run of the mid-90’s (due mainly to the dearth of RZA contributions) but Deck’s emceeing is worth the price of admission alone.
